Whitefield has no shortage of yoga options, from apartment classes to studios and online sessions. If you are just starting out, the choice can feel overwhelming. This guide walks you through what to think about, so you can find a class you will actually enjoy and stick with.
1. Start with what you want from yoga
Different goals point to different kinds of classes. Be honest with yourself about why you want to start:
- General fitness and flexibility: a regular group class for all levels is a great fit.
- Losing weight or building stamina: look for dynamic styles such as Power Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa or Cardio Yoga. Our weight loss yoga page explains how these help.
- Stress, sleep or focus: gentler practices such as Hatha Yoga, Pranayama, meditation and Yoga Nidra.
- A health condition: back pain, thyroid, PCOD, diabetes or high blood pressure need a more personal approach (see point 3).
- Pregnancy or after birth: choose prenatal and postnatal yoga with a teacher who can adapt every posture for you.
2. Group class or personal session?
Group classes are affordable, social and motivating. Practising alongside others keeps many people coming back, and a good teacher still gives individual corrections. They suit most healthy beginners.
Personal (one-to-one) sessions are planned entirely around you. They make sense if you have an injury or health condition, are pregnant, want faster progress, or simply prefer privacy.
Many people start with personal sessions to build confidence and move to a group later, or the other way round.
3. If you have a health condition, go personal first
Yoga can support recovery and long-term health, but conditions such as slip disc, thyroid disorders, PCOD or heart problems need postures chosen and adapted for you. A therapeutic yoga session starts with a consultation about your condition, then builds a plan around it.
At The Yoga Roots we offer therapeutic yoga personal sessions, with dedicated pages on thyroid, PCOD and PCOS and back pain. Wherever you practise, tell your teacher about any condition, and talk to your doctor before you start.
4. Pick a style that matches your energy
A quick guide to styles you will commonly see on timetables:
- Hatha Yoga: traditional and steady, holding postures with attention to alignment and breathing. A good place to start.
- Ashtanga and Ashtanga Vinyasa: structured, flowing sequences that build heat and strength.
- Power Yoga: fast-paced and intense, for stamina and strength.
- Kundalini and Swara Yoga: focused on breath and energy.
- Core and Cardio Yoga: fitness-focused sessions for strength and heart health.
You do not have to pick just one. Trying a few is the best way to find what you enjoy.
5. Choose timings you can keep
Consistency matters more than intensity. Two or three classes every week will do more for you than an occasional long session. Look for a studio with batches that fit your routine, whether that is before work, a mid-morning slot, or after your commute home.
At our Nagondanahalli studio, weekday batches run every hour from 6 AM to 11 AM and from 5 PM to 8 PM, so you can choose the one-hour slot that suits your day. See the full timetable.
6. Try a class before you commit
The best way to know whether a studio is right for you is to attend a class. Notice whether the teacher explains postures clearly, watches how students are doing, and offers easier variations.
Our special yoga sessions every Saturday are free, and they are a relaxed way to try different styles, from wall yoga to Yoga Nidra.
7. Questions to ask any studio
Before you sign up anywhere, it is worth asking:
- What training and certification do the teachers have?
- Are classes suitable for complete beginners?
- How many people are in a typical class?
- Can I switch batches if I miss one?
- How do you adapt classes for injuries or health conditions?
- What are the fees, and are there any trial or free sessions?
- What should I wear and bring?
You can read about our own teachers on our team page, and find answers to common questions in our FAQ.
